Welcome to Nordwalk, Nordic Walking in South Oxfordshire. Nordic walking is enhanced walking using two poles.
It’s origins are based on the cross country ski technique, which Finnish athletes use for their summer training.
During the 90’s, walking with poles became very popular all over Europe and the USA. In 1997 a Finnish pole
Manufacturer, Exel Oyj, produced the first Nordic Walking poles. The popularity of this activity, together with the
health benefits started to emerge, and in 2000, INWA (International Nordic Walking Federation) was formed.
Nordic walking poles differ from trekking poles. They are much lighter, thinner amd more flexible. The main difference
is the passive hand strap. This strap “connects” you to the pole, a fundamental part of the Nordic walking technique.
A trekking pole has a loop which fits loosely around the wrist. The whole process of Nordic walking involves a series
of synchronised movements which allows the technique to flow, this in turn automatically increases your walking speed,
all with less effort from you, as the poles do the walking.
May be you like the idea of getting or just keeping yourself a bit fitter, but perhaps conventional techniques like running, jogging or going to the gym just don’t
appeal to you. If you want to try something different, in the great outdoors, this may be just what you need. Poles are provided for all walks if required.
